COMCAST - MARIN Cable Franchise LISTEN to REGINA CAREY - PETER FRANCK Podcast Interview
CONTRACT HEARING
Larkspur City Hall,
400 Magnolia, Larkspur
NEXT MTA MEETING: After six years of negotiations, the MTA will discuss the proposed ten-year cable franchise agreement with Comcast at their next meeting. The MTA must insist on some key provisions in this agreement, before allowing Comcast to continue using our streets for its cables.
Please Come and Support Community Media Tell the MTA that you support the creation of a non-profit, independent community media center, and that any new franchise agreement must include the following:
• Designated Access Provider (DAP): This lets the people of Marin run their own Community Media Center and their Public, Education And Government (PEG) channels.
• Capital Expense: The new community media center must be adequately funded for new and upgraded equipment and facilities over the life of the agreement.
• Operational Expense: A media center must have enough income to keep running. This can be provided by a viewer choice fee (less than $1 a month) on cable bills.
• FM Service on the cable must be guaranteed. In many parts of Marin cable is the only way people can hear FM.
The contract should be released prior to or at the meeting.

NICARAGUA DOCUMENTARIES SCREENING
As the November 2006 Nicaragua presidential race heats up, Marin Interfaith Task Force on the Americas presents two films extolling the development of fair trade by grassroots organizations in this Central American country.
"We Have Other Plans" is a 28-minute exploration of projects, from fair trade coffee cooperatives to neighborhood women's support groups. It focuses on how and why these ventures are successful and applicable in communities around the world.
"The Road to Hope," a 23-minute film produced by Berkeley Potters for Peace, documents the tragedy and hope of the Nicaraguan people from the Contra War and Hurricane Mitch to current economic injustices. Potter-turned-filmmaker Francesca Roveda will introduce her film, discuss the design and production of ceramic water filters, and report on the development of national and international markets for Nicaraguan pottery.
Diana Bohn, Chair of Potters for Peace, will give an update on the current political situation in Nicaragua and explain alternative development projects being undertaken. She will display and sell unusual items of Nicaraguan pottery from her extensive collection.
Learn more about Nicaragua on Friday, January 13, at 7:30 PM, The First United Methodist Church, 9 Ross Valley Drive (at Fourth Street), San Rafael. A $5-10 donation is requested. No one turned away for lack of funds. Refreshments. Wheelchair accessible. For more information, please contact 415/924-3227, email mitf@igc.org, or go to www.mitfamericas.org.
